Every day I do one thing to try to benefit me. This sounds like a selfish concept, but it’s so important to everyone around me, as well.
Sometimes it’s working out. Reaching personal goals helps me to realize I can do anything. It, also, makes me happier and healthier to be able to keep up with my girls and stay around as long as possible for them.
Sometimes it’s sitting around eating ice cream for breakfast right out of the carton with giggles surrounding me because “our mama’s so silly today!” are the best sounds you can hear and appreciate.
Sometimes it’s reading a great book. Typically lately it’s one my daughter is also reading, which gives me perspective to be able to talk about things that interest her and builds our relationship. Not much else can make me happier than being close to them. If it’s a really great book, like this last one (Wonder by R.J. Palacio anyone?), then it reminds me of the person I want to be and the important things in life. And I absolutely adore that my daughter is hopefully reading and taking away those same lessons. We’ll have to chat about it.
Sometimes it’s sitting quietly on my hammock with some music, even if it’s for 5-10 minutes. Just some time to give me focus and keep my sanity with so much hectic time surrounding the rest of my day. Pretty much every time I have a little one or two join me within a few minutes to snuggle, which is just as wonderful. Hopefully I’m teaching them to take a minute and enjoy the simple things too.
Every day it’s making sure to surround myself with people who give me purpose and make me happy. There is so much negativity out there, and it’s important to find those who make you want to be a better person.
If the house doesn’t get cleaned because I chose one of these other things or the laundry waits another day, so be it. It’s not a race and there’s no trophy at the end for the best human. It’s about if we’re happy or not. That’s the trophy. We all have our own version of perfect and happy. Find yours. I’m out finding mine.
